Devils Postpile National Monument

Devils Postpile National Monument is a U.S. National Monument located near Mammoth Lakes, California. The monument protects Devils Postpile, an unusual rock formation of columnar basalt. It was created by a lava flow at least 100,000 years ago. The formation is a result of a lava flow that cooled and cracked vertically, creating hexagonal columns. The monument also includes the Rainbow Falls, a 101-foot waterfall on the Middle Fork of the San Joaquin River. The monument is open year-round and offers a variety of activities, including hiking, camping, fishing, and sightseeing.
