Inyo/French Camp
Inyo French Camp to Tom's Place, California is a scenic drive through the Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains. The route takes you through the Owens Valley, past the Alabama Hills, and up to the town of Tom's Place. Along the way, you'll pass through the towns of Bishop, Big Pine, and Independence, as well as the Inyo National Forest. The drive is approximately 70 miles and takes about two hours. Along the way, you'll be treated to stunning views of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the Owens Valley, and the Alabama Hills. You'll also have the chance to explore the many outdoor activities available in the area, such as hiking, fishing, and camping.

Fist time camping in our tent in the Sierra and we loved it! I have always been skeptical about camping in this area because of the bears and just being really cold. We camped the last week of camping season in October I was hoping to catch some of the fall foliage and it did not disappoint. Clean sites there was hardly anyone there it felt like we were the only ones there. The sites are Nice in space some are small and some are huge. Restrooms were nice and clean at all hours of the day. It was just beautiful. I can’t wait to come back. Host were nice and informative. We did not see any bears, according to the host one comes down every day but because we had dogs they would keep away from our site. Sites are close to the creek. We also got snow one day it was beautiful! Best tent camping experience ever.

Stayed 4 nights. Easy on and off of 395 so a perfect base camp for all kinds of activities in the area — hiking, fishing, kayaking etc. Close to Mammoth for the occasional ride into town for a bite to eat or a beer at one of the breweries. Creek runs through the camp and you can hear it at night. Sites really vary from small to large. Ours (44) was a large site with lots of trees and rocks. Worked great for us, but with our large tent, it’d have been a challenge in some of the other sites we saw. Large bear lockers. Ours got a direct hit from the afternoon sun so we were happy we could get extra ice for our cooler, as needed, at Toms Place or in Mammoth. Bathrooms are super clean and are located at the bottom of each “loop”. Recycle bins available for plastic, glass and aluminum. Temps were really hot — high 80’s-90’s, so get an early start to avoid peak heat!

This campground is closer to hwy 395 and the store in Toms Place. So it has convenience. It is well maintained, even if the one-way loop in which the sites are oriented is a little annoying. There are much prettier campgrounds further up Rock Creek Road, but if you wish to be near the store this is a good choice. Rock Creek runs right next to the campground, and is lovely.

Stayed for couple nights with large group. French camp is super clean, restrooms were very clean. Two thumbs up to our hosts Heather and Joe, they were very nice and helpful, They stop by few time to see if everything was fine. Had a great time will definitely be back.
